Our History

F.E. Forbes was founded in 1921 by our grandfather, Frank Elmer Forbes, and nurtured by his sons, Robert and Frank. Their legacy continues today as a third generation of Forbes family members remain committed to the goals, established one hundred years ago, of serving our local community  and providing expertise in a range of quality financial services and thoughtfully considered opportunities to borrowers and investors alike.

A HISTORY OF RELIABLE FINANCING

F. E. FORBES COMPANY, INC. traces its roots back to 1921, when Frank Elmer Forbes opened his first office on Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley, California. The name on the door read “F.E. Forbes Company, Real Estate and Insurance.”

Frank Elmer Forbes in 1921, Frank Forbes and his wife moved from Texas to Berkeley. His wife’s family introduced him to real estate income property ownership and he immediately fell in love with the business. Frank opened his first office on Shattuck Avenue in the heart of downtown Berkeley, the busiest trolley section at that time. The business was initially dedicated to the sale of residential homes and insurance. In 1935, Northern Life Insurance and Trust Corporation approached Frank and asked if he would become their first correspondent lender for their firm. He now was able to offer real estate financial services to all his friends and neighbors. While real estate was his greatest love Frank also loved people and the community. He was a Berkeley YMCA former board member, and active in community service organizations, a trait that has been passed down through the generations.

Frank Roy Forbes Frank started the beginning of the second generation to enter the business. In 1943, he took over management of the real estate property insurance services. Retired in 1982, Frank continues to be very active in the Berkeley YMCA and Kensington Community Church.

Robert Carol Forbes in 1950, Robert joined the company to manage the real estate loan origination and servicing departments. He retired in 1990. Robert was active in the Berkeley Kiwanis Club, the School of the Madeleine in Berkeley, and antique car collector and restoration expert.

Robert Randall Forbes in 1981, Robert became the start of the third generation to enter the family business. Robert took over the real estate insurance services and the company property management portfolio administration. Robert is active in the Berkeley Kiwanis Club, and Salesian College Preparatory High School.

Mark Edward Forbes in 1984, Mark joined the company. Mark oversees the real estate loan origination, private investor relations, and real estate acquisitions. Mark is active in the community Berkeley Host Lions Club, numerous real estate mortgage industry associations, enjoys golfing and antique car collector.
